A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Lagos State has raised concerns over alleged threats from NYSC officials after she posted a viral video criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s government over economic hardship and rising inflation.
The corps member, identified on TikTok as @talktoraye, did not hold back her frustration in the widely circulated video. She lamented the skyrocketing cost of living in Nigeria and the increasing difficulty of surviving on the NYSC monthly allowance.
Viral Video: A Cry for Help or a Call to Action?
In the emotional video, the corps member expressed her distress over the sharp rise in food prices, highlighting that a crate of eggs now costs N6,500, a dramatic increase from the N800 price she once knew.
“If a lot of Nigerians come out and start speaking about what we are going through, maybe changes will be made,” she stated.
“I don’t know if there is any other president that is as terrible as you, but you are such a terrible president.”
She also criticized the NYSC scheme, revealing that her monthly allowance barely covers her transportation and living expenses.
“Every single penny I make, I am using it to pay bills,” she lamented.
Beyond the financial strain, she described the poor living conditions in Lagos, claiming that the city "stinks" and questioning what the government was doing to address the problem.
Backlash and Alleged Threats from NYSC Officials
Shortly after the video went viral, the corps member claimed she began receiving threatening messages, allegedly from NYSC officials. In a follow-up video, she shared a recorded phone call with an NYSC official who angrily demanded that she delete the video immediately.
“Are you normal? Keep quiet and bring down the video you posted,” the official was heard saying.
Despite the intimidation, she stood her ground, insisting that she had only exercised her freedom of speech without making any false accusations.
“I made sure not to accuse the government of anything maliciously! I questioned them. I asked questions. As an NYSC corper, I didn’t sign off my freedom of speech.”
She further disclosed that NYSC officials had summoned her to their office on Monday, yet they continued reaching out in what she described as an attempt to intimidate and silence her.
"I Fear for My Life": Corps Member Speaks Out
In a series of posts on her Instagram page (@iamraye__), the corps member revealed that some NYSC officials were allegedly trying to track her down.
“Deleting this content is of no use because they already know me. However, deleting it means whatever they do to me, nobody would know.”
She expressed deep concern over her safety, urging the NYSC to handle the situation fairly rather than resorting to threats and intimidation.
“Dear NYSC, if you say a corper has faulted, you wouldn’t treat them like this and scare them! You are scaring me for my dear life. Please leave me alone.”
Her story has sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians applauding her courage while others warn of the potential consequences of publicly criticizing the government.
What Happens Next?
As the corps member prepares to meet NYSC officials on Monday, many Nigerians are watching closely to see how the situation unfolds. Will the NYSC take disciplinary action, or will this case spark a larger conversation about youth voices, freedom of speech, and economic hardship in Nigeria?
One thing is certain: this young woman’s outcry has ignited a nationwide discussion—and it’s far from over.
